Baby Names

OK, naming a human sucks! I can name my pet anything I want and not think twice about it, or if I do just change it. I think I may have had a cat with three or four names but still only responded to kitty! There is so much pressure involved, or at least there has been for my husband and I. Our very first task as parents, naming our baby, has been an epic fail to say the least. I don’t like what my husband likes and he just shakes his head at my suggestions. I have thrown up my hands, turned to prayer and have faith it will just come to me. He on the other hand, is focused on nothing else but his son’s name. Dammit it’s daunting. I just refuse to settle on this one, I want to LOVE the name.

Lately, my husband loves to annoy me with crazy names and jokes about names, for example, “Hey baby how about King? Lord? Blade? Dartanyon? Nico, from Grand Theft Auto? or Oliver? He LOVES Oliver so he throws out 5 horrible names to make his favorite seem like the hands down best. So far I Like Luka, Finn, Finley, and Polten, but I don’t Love any of them. Of all of the names we have poured through there have been maybe 5 total we both like, and zero that we love.

I also worry about my son hating his name, or picking a name I think is uncommon then on the first day of Kindergarten there are 4 boys with the same name. I have no doubt I will yell out shit and start crying! I have a common name and I hated having to be “April M” in a class with “April W.” and “April R.” I don’t want my son to have to deal with that. You would think with 4 million boy names out there, the top 5 would not be the ONLY ones 10 million people pick in 2012! I also try to keep in mind that my son will need to get a real job one day, so giving him a crazy long or hard to pronounce “uncommon” name might hinder his chances of being president.

We have been looking at names from our heritage like Austro-German, Irish and Australian names, but then my husband yells out a seriously American name and thinks it’s the most uncommon name he has ever heard. Then I tell him a name I love and he shows me how it was the most popular boy name in Australia last year. We are hopeless and that’s all there is to it. I really think it is going to come down to us being serious about it, locking ourselves in a room with nothing but baby name literature, and brainstorming until out brains explode.

Bottom line, I want an uncommon, brilliant, sexy name for my son. I want him to love his name or at the very least never think twice about it. I also want the name to come to me in my sleep ASAP so I can stop worrying and my husband will stop yelling names out to me 24/7! Thank God we have three more months to figure this out, because at this rate we need every one of those 90 days to come up with a name for our son.

Links to Baby Names-
http://www.babycenter.com.au/pregnancy/naming/top10namesaroundtheworld/ This is a long list of different nationalities around the world, some dating back to 2008. From my research it does conflict with government sites around the world so I don’t know how “Accurate” it is but it does have some great suggestions and I’d say about 75% of the list matches the government rated from 2010.
